Selenium
Powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress generated during hard training.
Why it matters
Selenium is a trace mineral that functions primarily as a component of selenoproteins antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from oxidative damage. It also supports thyroid function, immune response, and DNA synthesis. The amount of selenium in food depends heavily on the selenium content of the soil it was grown in, creating significant geographic variation in intake.
For endurance athletes
Endurance training significantly elevates oxidative stress. Selenium works alongside vitamin E and vitamin C to manage this load and support recovery between sessions. Adequate selenium also supports thyroid function, which regulates metabolism and energy levels both directly relevant to athletic performance.
