Sodium

The primary electrolyte in sweat. Essential for hydration, performance and preventing hyponatraemia.

1,500–2,300mg/day (more for athletes in heat)

Why it matters

Sodium is the primary electrolyte in extracellular fluid and the most abundant mineral lost in sweat. It regulates blood pressure, fluid balance, and nerve and muscle function. For endurance athletes, sodium is far more than just a dietary concern it is a critical performance and safety variable.

For endurance athletes

During long efforts, replacing sodium alongside fluid is essential. Drinking large volumes of plain water without replacing sodium can lead to hyponatraemia dangerously low blood sodium a serious and potentially fatal condition most common in long-distance events. Sweat sodium concentration varies significantly between individuals; salty sweaters need to pay particular attention.
